Meanwhile different factions have more varied T1-T3 units with varied stats. Every faction has expensive and elite units in their roster that resemble eachothers stats. That way you have only a few elite units but the core of the army is more economical. Like Levy Freemen and Lusitani Swordsmen.
One of the best parts of Rome II was the flavor and cost effectiveness in the Tier 2 and Tier 3 troops. So have fun fighting a war on multiple fronts in TOTAL WAR. It completely tanks economies and armies a suddenly instead of having 3-4 effective, varied (5-6 unit types), and economic armies you are left with 1 super expensive army made up of only 2-3 unit types of elite soldiers. I had to install a mod that allowed upgrading units without replacement in order to still be able to field the inferior, cheaper units. Sometimes I just need a few units of cheap spears. I don't need an entire army made up of crazy expensive elite forces. The period itself already minimizes some of this - camping a corner is less effective when it makes you a perfect target for cannon fire.Unfortunately, it looks like it follows the Attila system of the tech trees replacing lower tier, cheaper units. “One of the first things Richard did was to look at some of the exploit tactics people used in our previous games and say, ‘I’m going to make sure none of them work anymore,’” says Mark Sutherns.
